Apple Announces 'Best of 2020 Apps' From The App Store
Today, Apple announced its much awaited annual list of 2020's best applications and games. As in previous years, the winners were chosen by App Store editors based on factors such as the quality of the app, innovative design, accessibility and usage of Apple technologies, among other aspects. This year's "Best of 2020" recipients involve a variety of applications that helped users adapt to a life lived at home. For eg, Wakeout's home workout app won the iPhone App of the Year while Zoom snagged the top position as the iPad App of the Year.
For Apple TV App of the Year, Disney+, which enabled families to keep children occupied through coronavirus lockdowns, won. The streaming service just won best app in the Consumer Preference category of Google Play, revealed alongside its other Play Store winners on Tuesday.
Our mutual desire for travel, mostly to imaginary realms, was emphasized by the best games of the year. Genshin Effect (also a Play Store 'best title' winner) for iPhone Game of the Year, Legends of Runeterra as iPad Game of the Year, Disco Elysium as Mac Game of the Year, Dandara Trials of Terror as Apple TV Game of the Year and Sly Sasquatch as the Apple Arcade Game of the Year were included in the list of game winners this year.
Meanwhile Fantastical, a productivity app, won the Apple's Mac App of the Year further emphasizing the importance of work from home apps.
Endel, an app for relaxing and sleep, won the Apple Watch App of the Year. It's not unusual to see another relaxation app achieve a top app of the year accolade. On Tuesday, Google just awarded the sleep app, Loóna, the honor of best app of 2020, too.
Apps are a representation of society, as Apple stated in its announcement. And this year the emphasis on self-care and mental wellbeing, remote work and studying, remaining connected with family and friends, immersive and social games, and more was mirrored by people.
Apple picked a handful of applications that represent these "app trends," including Shine, a self-care app, Explain Everything Whiteboard, a remote learning app, Caribu, a family chat app, SharetheMeal, a charity giving app, and the redesigned Pokémon GO, which moved indoors.
The "Best of" winners this year will earn the first-ever physical App Store Best of 2020 prize, showcasing the emblem of the App Store cast in 100% recycled aluminum with the name of the recipient on the side.
Apple has unveiled the year's most downloaded apps and games, which are a showcase of actual market interest, unlike the "best of" editorial picks.
Not unexpectedly, these lists contained must-haves like Zoom and Gmail for remote work; a variety of escape games and not coincidentally, Plague, Inc. pandemic simulator; Among Us!, platforms for children such as Minecraft and Roblox; and the regular collection of top social applications led by TikTok this year not a Facebook-owned product.
